WLE Meets: Wedding Caligrapher, Joy Fairclough, of Studio French Blue

Last week’s Calligraphy article saw us falling more in love with this art than ever before.  We couldn’t wait to find out some more about this Wedding trend, and luckily, we knew just the person!

Speaking to Joy Fairclough – one of the incredibly talented Calligraphy Artists we’ve already worked with for several of our Paris Weddings – we got an insight into the world of this beautiful Art.  We chatted about how to incorporate script into a Wedding as well as Joy’s own business (Studio French Blue), her inspirations and how she found working with the team here at Wedding Light Events.  We hope you enjoy hearing from her just as much as we did!

    – Hi Joy!  For the benefit of our readers who don’t know you like we do, can you tell us a little about yourself ?

     – I’m originally from Michigan but I came to France 10 years ago,  instantly fell in love with the culture, and have been here ever since.  I met and married my husband 6 years ago, and we are currently restoring an old silk farm in the South. I split my time between Paris and province.

    – Your work is always so professionally finished, it looks like you’ve been doing this for a long time!  When did you first get in to Calligraphy, has it always been a passion of yours ?

     – I have to say calligraphy has always been a passion of mine. I was very close to my Grandmother when I was growing up, and she was a talented commercial artist, specializing in illustration, but also lettering. It was she who first let me play around with her stash of art school supplies, and showed me how to hold the pen and form the italic and blackletter alphabets.

    – That’s such a lovely, personal story – thanks for sharing it with us!  Can you pinpoint any ways your Grandmother especially influenced your art?

     – Absolutely!  I especially adored her regular, every-day Palmer Method handwriting, which was a graceful, flowing script taught in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Palmer method came out of Spencerian and Ornamental Penmanship, which are flourished, pointed pen script styles of extreme delicacy and beauty. Years of practice are required to execute these styles.

    – Wow!  We had no idea Calligraphy was such a complex, demanding process – talk about commitment!  We particularly like the regal, vintage aspect of your Calligraphy style – it’s so Paris – where does the inspiration for such intricate designs come from?

     – The study of the the script styles I talked about above inform everything I do, even when I’m asked to create unstructured, organic, “modern” letterforms.

    – It all sounds very complicated!  How do you manage to incorporate these personal inspirations with those of the Brides you design for ?

    – When creating a wedding invitation, for example, I try to get an idea of the personality of the bride and groom, and of their vision for their wedding day. I work with wedding planners to get the details. A wedding ceremony in Provence, with lavender fields as the backdrop and a bride whose Pinterest board shows wedding-day hairstyles like loose braids with wildflowers weaved in them, is not going to be drawn to the same styles in wedding stationery as a bride getting married at the George V in Paris.

    – We know how pedantic Brides can be about getting even the smallest details perfect for their Big Day.  Do the people you work with always know exactly what style they want for their calligraphy when they come to you?

     – Not always, but that’s where I come in.  The messy-braid bride, even if she hasn’t yet thought about what calligraphy style will suit, usually prefers simplistic, imperfect, organic letterforms that communicate warmth and spontaneity.  Hand-made papers, watercolor tones, and whimsy. The chic Parisian bride will more often be drawn to very luxurious stationery, engraved or Letterpress, and elegant Ornamental Penmanship script styles. So, there really are types and styles of calligraphy to suit different occasions. A messy organic script looks too informal and out of place in a Belle Époque palace ballroom, just as a gold-embossed and crested invitation suite does not suit a simple country wedding.

That’s easy enough, and beyond that, things get interesting! Sometimes I’m asked for something very chic but also a little rock-and-roll, or something very modern but also soft…  I take inspiration from the couple and from the venue.

    – It’s great that you take so much time in order to get things really perfect for each one of your Brides, we believe it’s one of the things that makes your work that bit extra special.  We think Calligraphy can add a real sparkle to a Paris Wedding and are always looking for new ideas to incorporate it into the Weddings we plan.  From your experience, how can script be used to enhance a Wedding?

     – Most of my clients come to me knowing already that they want a custom made, bespoke wedding invitation set. They want something original, which will set the tone for their big day–and the stationery is so important.  If you think about it, the wedding invitation (or Save-the-Date) is the first thing the guests see, and communicates so much about the event. There’s the basic information–what, where, when–but also the mood and atmosphere, based on the style.  Guests also love receiving the invitation in a calligraphed envelope. Couples I’ve worked with often write to tell me that their friends and family raved about the calligraphy, plan to frame their envelopes, that kind of thing. Of course getting an email like that makes my day!

    – It’s true that there’s nothing better to get you excited for a Wedding than a beautiful invitation coming through your postbox.  We were surprised upon seeing the many ways calligraphy can be used to personalise a Wedding.  Do you just specialise in invitations, or do you offer other services, too?

     – Yes, of course!  I often create a logo for the couple which we bring into other day-of calligraphy and signage, such as menus, thank you signs, welcome letters, gift bags, etc. Calligraphy and bespoke design can be used in so many ways to personalize an event.

    – And the big question that’s on all of our lips: how much does incorporating calligraphy into a Wedding usually cost?

     – As everything is bespoke, this can be a hard one to answer. As a rule, a couple can expect to budget around 500-600€ for a custom-designed invitation suite, and beyond that the costs are based on printing methods, and number of exemplaires.  For a small elopement, I sometimes create a one-off wedding announcement that can be photographed and shared on social media, or printed and sent out to all friends and family!

    – Are there any cheaper options, for brides who are dying to have some calligraphy on show but are a bit tight budget wise ?

     – There are definitely ways around this.  Something as simple as pretty place cards for an intimate wedding of just close friends and family doesn’t cost a lot, but is much appreciated by guests and adds a distinct touch. Wedding signage can be something as simple as a “Merci !” sign, or as elaborate as a hand-painted, gold-leafed welcome sign that takes an entire day to paint and calligraph. What the planner, the couple, and I come up with is always based on the client’s vision and budget.

    – We loved the Paris style shoot you did with us, how did you find working with the team here at Wedding Light Events?

     – So much fun! I liked the feel of this shoot. Synie’s does the most amazing cakes and that gorgeous pink and gold leaf creation is one of my very favorites she’s ever done. The classic, pale-pink roses from Une fleur en liberté were perfect with the flowering heather, and Olivier’s photos of the bride and groom with that amazing Carolina Herrera gown and slick blue tux, rolling up in that fabulous classic car from Anciennes de Prestige, were fantastic. Soft pinks and whites were the inspiration but balanced so beautifully with the sophistication of the couple and the gorgeous backdrop of the Ritz.

    – We’re so glad you liked working with us as much as we did you, Joy.  Thanks for taking the time to speak with us!

  • Wedding Trend – Calligraph-Y Your Big Day

If your idea of calligraphy involves a 18th century gentry man scrawling on parchment paper, you need to get up to speed.  Versatile and personalise-able, calligraphy has come back in fashion over the past few years, especially in the World of Weddings.  Done right, it can transform your special day  from run of the mill, to one of a kind.

From obvious things like Wedding Invitations to more unusual personalisation such as inscribed Wedding Cakes, calligraphy is something you can really have fun with.  Whether it be stone, wood, glass, paper or cloth, the possibilities of adding a personal touch to your day through the medium of pen and ink are endless.

Always partial to a bit of Wedding-Inpiration hunting, we’ve scoured the internet for the best of the best in Wedding Calligraphy ideas – go get inspired.

Wedding Table Menus & Place Settings:

Everything about this vibrant, blue setting is gorgeous, but what makes it really special is the Calligraphed plate detailing.  This is not only a chance to tie in the colour of the gold cutlery, but also adds a touch of personalisation, meaning each and every one of the guests feel special – it’s the little things that count.

Another pretty affair, this time in delicate shades of pink. While the table design itself, with its creased linen napkin, chopping board and spindly thyme-sprig are lovely, the Menu card in bright white adds a touch of modernity and polish to this shabby chic set-up.  The calligraphy style is wonderful, striking the perfect balance between scribbly and high-fashion.

    Wedding Invitations & RSVPs:

The colour of these wedding envelopes is beautiful – a deep crimson is so classically romantic – but what really sets them off is the salmon pink calligraphed writing.  Extravagant, swirly, vintage-look typography is used, which along with the added details of rose-gold wax seal, make these look like invites for a rather royal affair!

Sketchy floral patterns, muslin cloth and grey-blue, velvet ribbon give a big nod to the French shabby chic trend which is all about a less refined, effortless style.  Calligraphy goes hand in hand with this, and the scrawly, barely-there typography in muted colours used here compliments the theme perfectly.

    Wedding Accessories & Finishing Touches:

Avoid your groom presenting his personalised vows on a crumpled, well-worn piece of paper by giving him an equally personalised place to present them.  These little books are simple, sharp and stylish, keeping everything tidy while your words do the talking.

Being Parisian Wedding Planners, we were bound to love these oh-so French Wedding favours.  The macaroons look devine – and are no doubt delicious, too – but it’s the personalised, calligraphed gift tag that takes them from ‘cutes-y’ to Wedding-worthy.

You’ve spent years looking; trawling through all-white rails and in and out of changing rooms and finally bought the Wedding Dress of your dreams.  The most important garment of your life shouldn’t be on any plastic hanger, now, should it ?  Give your dress the presentation it deserves, with a personalised coat hanger done in the calligraphy style of your choice.

As you can see, with calligraphy, there are no rules and you can let your imagination go wild.  Want to see more ?  Check out our Calligraphy Pinterest board for even more inspiration.

12 Wedding Reception-Ready Restaurants in Paris

It’s no secret that Paris has some great restaurants, in fact it’s likely one of the reasons you decided to hold your Wedding here in the first place.  However, there are restaurants and then there are Wedding Reception-ready restaurants.  With dozens of offerings on every boulevard, it can be overwhelming trying to pick out the right one. Well, that’s where Wedding Light Events come in; with our extensive Paris knowledge, we’ve made a list of the best of the best to ensure your dining experience is as perfect as possible.

     1. Lasserre

From the moment your Wedding Car pulls up outside the charming, stand-alone structure of Michelin Star Restaurant Lasserre, you’ll be in good hands.  Priding theirselves not just on exceptional food and wines, but also on the perfect balance between attentive and invasive service, you’ll be able to sit back, and relax, while your Wedding Dinner is taken perfect care of in one of the many private rooms.  The restaurant was opened by Rene Lasserre himself, and has been sitting elegantly since 1942.  With the soft lift, ornate chandeliers and magnificent painted ceilings, you and up to 50 guests will feel like movie stars in this iconic setting.  Perhaps the most beautiful art on show, though, is the food, available to try on 3 different menus along with one wine tasting, starting at €130p/h.

2.The Restaurant Hôtel les Bains – La salle à manger

If you envisage your Wedding Dinner being a little off-the-wall, this quirky Parisian neo-brasserie might just be the one for you. With it’s extraordinary, cave-like domed ceiling and pillars, bright walls and contrasting monochrome flooring, it definitely has the wow factor.  The food is just as impressive, with a cooking approach developed by the two Michelin starred chef, Philippe Labbe.  All ingredients are bought from local and sustainable producers, with their honey sourced on site from their own rooftop bee hives – it doesn’t get much fresher than that! Whether it be a small party of six or a large wedding reception, Hôtel les Bains has lots to offer.   L-shaped tables are available for up to 26 guests at €100p/h plus an additional €3k for the space, or if you want to go all out, privatise the entire restaurant for €25k plus food and drinks.  There’s even a club available for hire downstairs if you want to keep the party going all night long.

    3. Les Ombres

Who needs fancy decor when you can have Paris itself as the backdrop of your Wedding dinner?  Restaurant Les Ombres is located inside the Quai Branley Museum, making it one of the only places in the City offering panoramic views.  Letting the magnificent Eiffel Tower do all the talking, the decor is minamilistic and modern and the food contemporary, with an inventive offering influenced by many international cuisines.  Surprisingly affordable, with prices starting at €85 p/h including drinks for up to 40 guests, your dream of a Parisian wedding has never been more achievable.

    4. Restaurant le Saint James

Looking for an intimate affair in a historical Parisian setting?  Look no further.  Located inside the hotel that was once a 1892 Chateau, The 3 Michelin Star Restaurant le Saint James is the epitome of luxury, with antique chandeliers, polished oak and striking oil paintings.  If that wasn’t enough, head outside and be greeted by a Pride and Prejudice-style patio, with beautiful parasols and white, lace-like seating.  Such a divine location requires equally impressive food and drink, something Chef Virginie Basselot and ‘wine whisperer’ Micael Morais definitely deliver on.  In order to assure a sophisticated and harmonious atmosphere, the maximum number of diners is limited to twelve, inside or out.  At a price of €130p/h plus drinks, it’s the perfect place to make your private Parisian Wedding dreams come true.

    5. Restaurant le Diane

Have the best of both worlds for your Wedding Dinner at Michelin Restaurant Le Diane, situated inside of one of Paris’ famous hotels, Le Bouquet.  The circular, domed room opens out to an elegant summer patio, giving you both the comfort of an inside setting whilst having nature on your doorstep – literally.  A refined and feminine decor with plush velvet in romantic purples and striking wall lighting is used inside while the terrace is a much more minimalistic, modern affair.  A seasonal Menu by Chef Jean-Yves Leuranguer is offered for a party of up to 40 Wedding guests, with prices starting at €150, including drinks.  While privatisation fees of around €8k are added on to this, the versatility the location offers for wedding day, come rain or shine, is a priceless thing.

    6. Le Bon

Nestled inside what’s considered as the most upmarket and socialite arrondissements of Paris, Restaurant BON offers exclusivity, excitement and extravagance.  With four different rooms, each offering an entirely different decor, there is something for everyone, and the space can be entirely privatised or partially, in order to accommodate numbers from 10, right up to 180.  Far from the traditional French affair, the menu is based around Southeastern Asian cuisine, something which is sure to make you Wedding Dinner one to remember. Set menus from €49.50 to €122 are available, or if you want something entirely unique and catered to you, tailored menus can also be discussed to ensure your day is as unique as you are.

    7. 114 Faubourg

Far from the muted colours and monochrome theme of many of Paris’ finest establishments, Michelin Star Restaurant 114 Faubourg is sure to bring a splash of colour to your Wedding Dinner.  Set on two levels, with floral wall panelling and intricate, black and gold-leafed railing, the setting is vibrant and ornate.  The bustling and ambiance-enhancing open-plan kitchen sees Chef Jean-Charles Cauquil and his talented team creating their sophisticated but classic dishes right before your eyes.  Despite being situated inside the famous Hotel Bristol, the clientele are mainly loyal, local Parisians so tables are kept to smaller numbers, welcoming from 8-10 wedding guests with menus starting €160p/h including drinks.

    8. Le Taillevent

Restaurant Le Taillevent has a distinctively Parisian decor.  A classic and understated style, including wooden panelling, winding stairs and stone pillars is mixed with modern touches in the lighting, bright artworks and striking floral arrangements, giving just the right amount of wow-factor for a Wedding.  Multiple dining rooms can cater for up to 36 with prices starting at €120p/h for a taste of their three Michelin star menu which includes perfected balance of flavours and exquisite presentation.

    9. L’Oiseau Blanc

Why have your Wedding Dinner anywhere when you can have it enjoying jaw-dropping views of Paris on what’s known as the best terrace in the City?  Sit surrounded by glass from floor to ceiling in their aviation-themed room and you’re sure to feel on top of the world – just as you should on your wedding day.  If you’ve got bigger ideas, their beautiful reception rooms can cater for up to 80 people including a dance area, champagne aperitif, 3 course dinner and much more from €265 p/h.  Whether your inside or out, Chef Sidney Redel’s traditional french cuisine with a hint of contemporary flair is sure to add the finishing touch to your experience in this stunning location.

    10. Le Meurice

If you’re thinking of going big, bold, and beautiful, Le Meurice is the obvious choice.  With enough space to host the Wedding Reception of a lifetime and decor that wouldn’t look out of place at a Palace, you’d be stretched to find a more glamorous location.   Antique mirrors, bronze tones, marbles, and much more set the scene inside, while an astounding view onto the Jardin des Tuileries assures continued beauty wherever the eyes of your Wedding guests may wander.  A variety of Menus by Chef Alain Ducasse starting from €130p/h are offered, and with the array of reception rooms available all with varying privatisation fees, the options for your day are endless.

    11. Le Cinq

Another great option if you need somewhere capable of catering for big numbers – up to 315 to be exact – is 3 Michelin Star Restaurant Le Cinq, inside another one of Paris’ most prestigious Hotels,  Hotel George V.  Light and elegant, the textiles in shades of gold and grey and magnificently detailed pillars and wall panelings give the atmosphere of a private Chateau. Chef Christian Le Squer – who defines himself as a “creator of flavors and composer of tastes” – is paired with Eric Beaumard – once named vice champion in the Wine Stewardship Contest – to make this the ultimate fine-dining experience.  With the best in the business catering to your every need along with the stunning setting, the €359p/h includes everything you could ever dream of for your big day in the City of Love.

     12. La Maison Blanche

The Champs Elysées is one of the most famous spots in the world, and the chicest, too.  Testimony to this great reputation is La Maison Blanche, a place both to see and be seen in. Sitting on the top of the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Bruno Frank’s restaurant offers outstanding views over Paris set over two levels.  The decor is sleek and sexy with plus, textiles in neutral colours and dimmed mood lighting, completing this warm and intimate setting. The restaurant can cater for up to 40 for a Wedding dinner, with the price per head set at  €135 including drinks.  Why not have the Parisian skyline all to yourself and privatise the terrace for an extra cost of €2000 ?  It is your Wedding day, after all.

  • Bethany & Brendon’s Beautiful Chapel Expiatoire Ceremony

Bethany and Brandon are on their way to Malaga for their honeymoon this morning! Yes I am jealous, a little bit of Spain would do very nicely at the moment. They married at the chapel Expiatoire in Paris a couple of days back. Our WeddingLight photographer sent us some of the photos of their elopement just now and I couldn’t help rushing to the blog for a little update on our latest Parisian elopement!
We had been planning their big day in Paris for a little while now. Bethany and Brendon met up three years ago in Louisiana where they grew up while they were vacationing and YES fall in love! They wanted something intimate to seal their union and decided to elope to Paris. They will be having a big bash when they return to Colorado where they now live but their wedding day was going to be just for the two of them. Bethany fall in love with the chapel Expiatoire; beautiful neo classic building in the 8th arr. of Paris. They had private dining at the “La Perouse” restaurant in the latin quarter and celebrated the evening with some pink Veuve Clicquot champagne, one of my favorite! Gorgeous photography from Olivier, beautiful day, not a drop of rain in sight. I wish them both a sweet and happy life together. Cheers to our wedding couple of the week!
