    Q. What is your background and how did you get into the dress rental business?

I was working in the communication industry in big companies but over 10 years, I wanted to start my own business in fashion because I have a natural eye for it and a good fashion taste. I realized that if you have an important event to attend and you want to dress up, you don’t have many options other than to buy a very expensive designer dress, which is something I did myself when going to my friend’s weddings, so I thought that maybe the dresses which I bought could be used by others. I began looking into the market and realized that this concept didn’t exist in Paris so I decided to create “Ma bonne Amie”. I started the dress rental business in 2009, it was a very new concept in France at the time so lots of people were very interested and we got very good reviews from the media. We got a lot of TV press and so on which was really nice because the subject was so new and interesting for them. The concept worked well so after 2-3 years I decided to expand a little bit and to do more consulting and coaching, which entails helping women and also working with professionals in the workplace and companies because it’s something I know very well from my own working experience. I work with firms and agencies by helping them if they have any special events.

    Q. How did you decide to expand to Bridal dresses?
I’ve always had many customers asking me if I had any bridal gowns to rent but last year in particular, I had lots of new potential clients and agencies looking for the same thing and I realized that this concept did not exist in Paris, you could not rent an evening gown or wedding dress. Other than buying a dress, there was no other solution, it’s an amazing concept; especially if you only need a dress just for one day or a photo-shoot, so I decided to buy a collection of couture wedding dresses, mainly from American designers and we launched this service for clients who are looking at renting a wedding gown designer dress for one day in Paris.

    Q. How does the process work; from choosing a dress to wearing it on the day?
First of all people find “ma bonne amie” through different ways, such as the internet of course, word of mouth and from the media, then they will go on our website, from the website you make an appointment with our stylist. Clients will come to the showroom near the Palais Royal, which will be privatized and you will have your own, personal style consultant who will help you to choose the perfect outfit for your event, whether it be for a wedding, opera, a party, an event nearby or Cannes film festival per say.

It also depends on your body-shape and the way how the dress fits you so we will help the lady to choose the perfect dress, we can also do some alterations. Then you will have to sign a contract and you will be able to pick up the dress the day before the event and return it 2 days afterwards, or there is also a delivery system available. The dry cleaning is included in our service so you don’t have to worry about that at all.

    Q. How many dresses do you have at the moment?
We have more than 250 models of long, evening gowns and cocktail dresses. We also have clutches, jewelry, furs and accessories. They’re mostly French or Italian high couture. The wedding gowns are from very renowned wedding designers. Most of them are American. We have dresses by very famous, well-known designers because clients will know their brand. The idea is not to be original, the idea is to be luxurious.

    Q. Do you have any advice to future brides when choosing their dress?
It depends on the event and how long they’ll be in the dress. I’ll never rent a dress for a full wedding event, only for the photo-shoot. I believe that when you get married you must have the perfect dress for your own body for example, if you’re short you shouldn’t choose something with much volume as it will make you look shorter, but if you’re only choosing the dress for a photo-shoot, you should choose the dress of your dreams because the photographer is the magician and he can do whatever you want and make you look how you want, so if you’re short he will make you look taller and so on, that way you can have the dress of your dreams because it’s just for the memories and you will always have the magic of the pictures.

    Q. Do you have any memorable stories from the job?
Well, of course we rent dresses to ‘normal’ people because famous people are often given high couture dresses for free from the designers themselves, it is free advertising really, but at “Ma bonne Amie”we pamper and style you the same way you would be at Chanel for Cannes film festival. We make people feel like celebrities, we give them luxury treatment and provide them with a luxury dress to wear and overall high quality, Parisian experience. We’re situated in the Palais Royal area, right next to the Louvre in an exclusive luxury area which is important for clients who don’t know the area. You feel very at home when you come into ma bonne amie.

What is funny is that we’ve had some well-known, famous people who have used our services such as older actresses which is funny as you wouldn’t expect it. Once a young hip and trendy young Parisian woman came in and she said she was going to an important event with one of our  French icon. She wanted to dress up and wear something special for the occasion. Her boyfriend was taking her to a private party with Johnny Halliday! She left the showroom with a dress from Balenciaga and she Rocked the night away!

  • Paris Elopement: Levie and Jason’s Neo-Renaissance Palace Ceremony

Paris Elopement: Levie and Jason’s Neo-Renaissance Palace Ceremony

Levie had contacted us in March to begin planning her intimate elopement in Paris with her fiancé, Jason. Although they were planning larger festivities back at home in Canada beforehand, they wanted something that was truly special just for the two of them while in the City of Love.  Every couple is different, but it is heartwarming when they want to focus on the simple details and make some time for themselves to let each other know how much they mean to the other.

The day began with the delivery of Levie and Jason’s flowers at their cozy Marais apartment. Levie’s favorite flowers were baby’s breath and her colors were peach tones. So naturally, our wonderful florist, Estelle, created a lovely peach-colored rose and baby’s breath bouquet for her with a matching boutonnière for Jason. Then our dynamic duo: Fred and Muriel arrived to pamper Levie for her bridal hair and makeup session. She opted for a more natural look with a cool brown-toned smokey eye and nude lip paired with an elegant updo. Our in-house photographer, Olivier Lalin stopped by for a few photos before their chauffeur arrived in an adorable gray classic Citröen 2CV to take them to their ceremony location.  Levie and Jason were looking for an outdoor location with beautiful Parisian architecture with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Right away we knew the best place! A special location for them with just those exact descriptions! Not far from the iconic Eiffel Tower is a gorgeously built museum that first opened back 1895. Surrounded by a beautiful garden, the neo-renaissance building was inspired by Palladianism and exemplifies what is known as the “Beaux-arts” style that was popular in the 19th century. Thus, it was the perfect location for Levie and Jason’s ceremony.  Centered among two glorious pillars and an amazing sculpture serving as a backdrop, the two exchanged personal hand-written vows and a lovely speech was prepared by Igor, one of our wonderful officiants. After a few touching tears were shed, the two walked away with a framed certificate to commemorate their special day. After a few more photos with Olivier around the sublime location, their chauffeur picked them up to begin their photo tour through Paris. After several hours of shots around the French capital, their chauffeur drove them back to their apartment for a quiet, romantic dinner to end their very special day.

Congratulations Levie and Jason. We wish you all the best!

  • Styled Shoot: A Dreamy Vintage Inspired Styled Shoot

WeddingLight Events is thrilled to be sharing our first ever styled shoot! This was our first attempt at creating an inspirational bridal shoot for our lovely international brides and we are thrilled with the results. We certainly could not have achieved this outcome without our phenomenal team of vendors whom without their assistance, dedication and contribution would not have been possible.

It started with a simple idea of doing something with a vintage chic theme, which was realized with the addition of our friendMax Chaoul‘s stunning vintage inspired gowns. The Daisy gown is a 1920’s inspired look in a fluid low waisted satin design and a gorgeous embroidered lace top. The second is the Lana gown, which is a 1940’s inspired look in a empire cut with a romantic long sleeved crochet design. We then paired ethereal veils and romantic headpieces from Rhapsodie Paris, lovely artisanal (and ethically made) jewelry by Paulette à Bicyclette (yes, you’ve seen her on our blog before!) and whimsical florals by Edith of Une Fleur en Liberte in white and pastel peach and pink colors. To complete our models looks hairstylist, Lucie Letz and Los Angeles makeup artist, Melody Kennedy opted for one model with a bold look that included a daring pink lip and smoky eyes and the other model with a charming and natural look and playful curls. For the location we wanted to have a “Secret Garden” feel with all of its serenity and romance. We were delighted when a friend of our photographer allowed us to use his dreamy home, which is just location outside of Paris in the Parisian countryside. Everyone’s contribution was important, but without the amazing talent of our wonderful photographer, Olivier Lalin of WeddingLight Photography, this shoot would not have happened.

We certainly hope this inspires our beautiful brides to be! Keep checking the blog as we are in the midst of preparing for another shoot before the summer’s end.

  • Paris Elopement: Liza & Ira’s Palais Galliera Elopement

We had the great pleasure of helping an amazing couple, Liza and Ira, plan their very special vow-renewal here in Paris. After passing through some very emotional personal events during the planning process, the New Jersey couple’s time in the City of Love became extremely important. WeddingLight Events, of course, was only too happy to help them make their dream ceremony a reality. We feel so fortunate to have clients like Liza and Ira who so truly trust in our abilities to do what we love most!

Liza and Ira have been together for 10 years and exchanged vow in front of a stunning marble statue titled, “Protection and Future,” by Honoré Icard framed by glorious marbled columns. After a heartwarming tearful exchange, the couple shared a dance together as husband and wife before venturing off in their vintage Jaguar MK V for a tour of the city with their photographer, Olivier Lalin. The couple finished the evening with a divine dining experience at one of Paris’ most sought out restaurants: Alain Ducasse’s Restaurant at Le Meurice.

Liza was kind enough to send us a few touching words about our work, which we are very, very grateful to hear…

“I finally had a few moments to sit quietly and go through Olivier’s photos today, and I have to say I was completely moved. Somehow he captured the essence of how Ira and I feel for each other while including every special request I made including the amazing architecture and beautiful imagery. I knew he would be a great photographer, which is how I made my decision to go with him and WeddingLight Events, but I really wanted to let you know that your whole team — the hair, the makeup, the flowers, and your recommendation of venue for the vows, your own extreme attention to detail — everything about this experience was beyond compare — I cannot recommend you highly enough to other brides; You went above and beyond through all the crazy that was in our lives, helped me through the trauma of [some unexpected personal events] and the stress and worry of planning this experience from an ocean away. In the end, it turned out more special than I ever imagined possible — thank goodness for the one day of sun!! The photos of Ira as he said he vows to me brought tears back all over again. The great photos of us laughing and truly enjoying the city, the experience, and each other are priceless.

For everything you and Olivier did for us — Merci x 1,000,000,000!”

  • WLE Meets: Wedding Gown Designer, Reinaldo Alvarez

If you’ve been following our blog for a while you might have already seen this interview with wedding gown designer Reinaldo Alvarez. Yesterday we caught up with Reinaldo at his beautiful showroom in the heart of the Marais in Paris (it’s a hard life) to ask him some questions about his influences, the process of dress fitting and a whole lot more. Renowned for his chic, minimalist style dresses, Reinaldo is also a fountain of knowledge on all things wedding related and, lucky for us, he’s always more than happy to give out some of his invaluable advice!

    ***

    ***
Hi Reinaldo! So, you started off by designing evening wear, did you always want to end up designing wedding dresses  or was it a natural progression for your line?

I needed to sell! People only shop in the sales, either now or in January… so I had to change my activity! My mother had a wedding shop in Puerto Rico so people always asked me why I didn’t make wedding dresses… but at the time I thought I don’t want to! Then an American girl ordered a dress from me even though I didn’t have a wedding dress collection. It was a short dress with a coat for a civil ceremony, and that was the beginning of it! So I made a small collection of about 20 dresses; the first season I sold 13, the second time around I sold 45!

Has your upbringing in Puerto Rico influenced your designs?

Yes, a lot. I come from a family where everyone did sewing, everyone was in fashion. My mother had a shop and the way she dressed, the way she created her stuff, influenced me a lot. Everywhere I went there was something to do with fashion going on, on both sides of the family… my mother’s side and my father’s side!

Can you give us an overview of the process of buying one of your dresses? How long does it take and how many fittings are needed?

Normally there is a 6 month delay and it is really made to order… it’s like the haute couture process. There’s a pattern made out of cotton which is the same as the shape of the dress the bride is going to wear, but made to her exact measurements. It is sculpted on the girl, then we cut it flat and that’s the pattern… it’s called a “toile”. When you buy a dress in the shops and they say it is made to order, it’s not made to order.

That was my next question! What are the advantages of buying directly from a designer rather than a dress shop?

Buying a dress from a bridal shop is not the same, it comes from a standard size and then they retouch it… it’s altered by a seamstress that didn’t make the dress and it is sold by a salesperson who is not a seamstress, so the dress is not personalised at all. Really it is a ready-to-wear dress that is then made to fit the girl.

Interesting! So you say the process takes about six months?

Yes, it takes six months because I don’t just have a couple of customers, I see many people per week.  When the season starts I have to plan my fabric buying, my minimums of fabric, what I need to buy from Italy, how many yards etc… so it has to be done ahead of time to avoid shortage, because I buy by the bolt. You need at least three fittings, but four or five if needed because often people either gain weight, lose weight or get pregnant! This year it’s been pregnant city!

What kind of materials do you use? Where do you source them from?

It’s mostly silk of different types. It’s all Italian silk… it’s the best. Italy has the best fabric there is… Lyon was the capital of silk for many, many years and there is still a silk market there but the Italians… wow, they do fantastic stuff!

Where do you look for inspiration?

A little bit of everything but I always look to 50s and 60s haute couture, especially the 50s. It’s timeless, elegant… it was the most elegant period.

So when you’re designing a dress, do you have a specific woman in mind? A woman with certain attitudes or tastes?

No, because you have to try to appeal to a lot of different women. So I have things with or without a collar, dresses that suit women of different sizes… so no, I don’t have a particular woman in mind. Except for one thing: the women who come here don’t want frills, they don’t want frou-frou or flowers or petals, they don’t want lace… they want a beautiful fabric and a well-made dress.

Can you share with us some of your favourite spots in Paris?

Of course! There’s my neighbour, la Mangerie, which is a nice tapas restaurant. It’s excellent, young, fun and great food… it’s fantastic. What else…. it might sound snobby but Versailles! We go once a month to a restaurant in Versailles called the Brasserie du Théâtre, it’s really nice. Where else… I don’t go out that much!

Does the city of Paris play a role in your designs?  Would your designs be the same if you were still in Puerto Rico?

Paris does not influence my designs at all. It’s mostly an American thing – minimalism, it’s not French at all. But it does appeal to the French, they love it because it’s simple.

Do you have any advice for a bride when looking for her wedding dress?

Yes, don’t waste time… don’t waste your own time or other people’s time. If you can’t afford a designer dress, don’t go to a designer; this is a business and people must respect the fact that we live from this. Nobody talks about it but people should be told! If you want to look at designer dresses go to the internet, look at pictures, but don’t waste people’s time. Time is money! People should also know that copying a dress is against the law…  I get calls from people asking me to copy a Givenchy organza dress… why are you calling me? Call Givenchy!

I imagine it’s also quite insulting as a designer to be asked to copy someone else’s designs?

It’s very insulting! I got a call from someone asking me to recreate a suit they’d seen at Dior… it’s by Dior, you should buy it from Dior! If I go to a restaurant and order a hamburger that is €15 and I only have €12, I go to McDonalds! People need to respect that it’s a business. And everyone should know that all these ready-to-wear dresses, they come from China. People should be buying French, buying dresses that are made in France.

What should a bride bring to her fitting?

They should bring the shoes to the second fitting but the most important thing is the underwear… the bra, because that’s what gives you the fit across the chest. If you change the bra you change the placement of the breasts… it has to be the one you are going to wear on the day of the wedding.

What about the shoes? Do you design shoes as well?

No I don’t design shoes but shoes are very important! They should match the dress… in my opinion the most elegant is the fabric shoe, made out of the same fabric as the dress. People might think it’s old-fashioned but that’s not the case, elegance is atemporal, it’s timeless. Some people come in with red shoes or grey shoes… faux pas, faux pas, faux pas! Comfort is also a very important word – the bride has to be comfortable on the day of the wedding and I try to give them advice on what to choose. The shoes need to have a beautiful point; the tip of the shoe should be nice, whatever shape she prefers, but it should match the dress. The heel should be comfortable too, it should be a stack heel, something thick that she can balance in… no stilettos!

Do you advise brides on their hair and makeup? What’s your favourite style?

I like natural, just better than every day. She shouldn’t arrive with a huge chignon when she’s not used to having a chignon! If she has a bob, let her wear her bob! It needs to be an exercise in elegance… it’s not Halloween! With makeup she should have a natural face, no fake eyelashes… for my brides at least! She should be the most natural and tasteful as possible, people need to be able to recognise her.  If she hardly wears makeup every day then she arrives covered in makeup on the day of the wedding people won’t recognise her… and she’s not going to look any younger!

Can you sum up the style of your dresses in a few words?

I can do it in one word : minimalist.

So what’s next for you as a designer?

I’d like to sell my dresses all over the world. There might be something happening in Miami but for sure there’ll be something happening in Paris with my ready-to-wear evening wear collection. We’re working on selling it to stores in a professional showroom, it’ll happen for next summer.

Last question: if you could dress anyone, dead or alive, in one of your dresses, who would it be?

I have no idea… who would I like to dress…. definitely not Jennifer Lopez even though she’s Puerto Rican like me!.. dead or alive… it’s a tough question… Coco Chanel so we can compare notes!
